My name is Olivia DeMatteo and I am third-year student at Penn State University. A couple months back, while picking my schedule, I was intrigued to find an economics class based on the use of natural resources. I am incredibly environmentally friendly; and love learning new ways I can better myself to better the world. Throughout the semester I studied the staggering research behind the depletion of our available resource. This website allows for a comprehensive overview of the data found based on the earths natural resources and well being.
Throughout my studies I focused on an overall analysis of the United States but also took a closer look at the state of Maryland. Comparing locations of where natural occurrences happened allowed me to study normalcy, trends and anomalies. My Professor, Dr. Wooten, assigned various topics for research, such as, climate change, waste and recycling, energy generation, natural amenities, and land use. However, upon the sixth genre of focus I was able to choose my own topic, where I decided on natural disasters.
To get a closer look at the subjects of study simply click on the "topics" drop down menu at the top of the page. Each category provides an interactive visualization, extensive explanation of the data, photos, and shocking facts. Make sure to take a look at the "about me" page to get to know a little more about myself and hopefully connect on other platforms of social media. I hope you enjoy learning more about the economic aspect of environmental data as much as I do!
The documentary, Cowspiracy, reveals the truth behind unsustainable environmental issues and the path to sustainability. This film is a heart wrenching yet enlightening source of information about what we can do to help use our natural resources more viably going forward.
As a class we watched this film and it was a great way to become informed on controversial topics quickly all while causing a spark in me to make a difference. I highly recommend watching this documentary for anyone interested in learning about natural resources! Together we can make a change.
